From August 10-12, HotCity Theatre and Fox Associates Foundation presented the Second Annual GreenHouse New Play Festival. Six new plays - selected from over 200 worldwide submissions - were given staged readings by a troop of six local directors and almost 30 local actors.
Five of the six playwrights attended the festival, coming in to St. Louis from Seattle, Chicago, New York, and Massachusetts.
The capacity crowds provided critical feedback for these playwrights at post-show talkbacks and on audience survey cards.
MEN WITH CLUBS by Gregory Jones of New York was awarded the Jury Prize. This darkly comic examination of friendship, mid-life crisis, and golf will now continue in a developmental process with HotCity Theatre. Mr. Jones will return to St. Louis in early December to work with a professional dramaturge, director, and cast of actors for a week-long developmental workshop. This workshop will culminate in another public and free staged reading on Monday, December 17, at the Centene Center, 3547 Olive. Whether you saw the first reading this past weekend or not, you are invited to come be part of the playwriting process.
MEN WITH CLUBS will then be added to the slate of HotCity Theatre’s 2008 Mainstage Season for its professional world premiere.
