HotCity Theatre Internship Programs

HotCity Theatre offers an internship/volunteer program for people interested in theatre who live within the St. Louis region. This program is perfect for a busy person or student who wishes to familiarize themselves with working for a midsized non-profit theatre company. HotCity internships can be done in conjunction with a local university for credit. An intern position can be for one show (10 weeks) or one full semester for class credit and averages between 5-10 hours per week.

There are three areas of study offered:

Techincal Theatre and Production:

This program is appropriate for high school and college students who want to participate in a cirriculum that is focused on any area of theatre production. Each program may include experience in as few or as many disciplines as desired, from lighting, sound, scenery, properties, costumes, or production management. The program is highly customizable but the basic outline is as follows:

• Bi-weekly meetings with the Production Manager and/or Assistant Production Manager. These meetings are first to discuss your goals for the internship, questions you have while you work with us, to discuss progress, and to evaluate the program.
• Production Meetings with the company: HotCity produces four shows that all occur during the school year, and you will be required to attend many of these meetings.
• Talkbacks: We require interns to attend designer talkbacks to ask questions and learn more about the show, the process, and the field.
• Attend at least two advance meetings with the designer of your preferred field.
• Work with that designer during the build, loadin, tech, of the production.
• Participate in strike of the show.
• Maintain a weekly journal of your work, questions, and progress.
• Write a short “post mortem” of the experience for your school and your own records.

Theatre requires a very specific schedule that relates directly to the production of the show. The bulk of every intern’s work will be completed in a 2-4 week period surrounding the show run. A typical commitment with HotCity Theatre would include between 80 and 110 hours of work per semester.

Arts Administration:

This program is appropriate for college students who want to participate in a cirriculum that is focused on the aspects of managing a non-profit organization. This program will engage students in grant writing, board/staff relationships, contracting and negotiations, marketing, development, media and patron relationship and findraising. The program is highly customizable but the basic outline is as follows:

• Weekly meetings with the Managing Director and/or Marketing Director: These meetings are first to discuss projects, determine goals ask question, and reflect on tasks completed.
• Production Meetings with the company: HotCity produces four shows that all occur during the school year, and you will be required to attend many of these meetings.
• Staff Meetings with the artistic staff: These occur once per month and are required attendance.
• Board Meetings: These occur twice per semester and are required.
• Participate in strike of any performance.
• Write a short “post mortem” of the experience for your school and your own records.

This internship is very flexible and project oriented. There are few office hours required and much of the work can be completed from the comfort of a coffee shop or a living room with Wi-fi access. Candidates should be proactive and self-motivated. The intership requires an average of five hours per week although this is variable depending on the students efficiency and success in each task.

Successful interns are out-going, willing to communicate with patrons, have very good writing and organization skills, and adapt to changing situations.

GreenHouse New Play Fesitval

The annual New Play Festival is one of HotCity's most important events. Interns for the festival work 5-10 weeks before and during the event and are a large influence on the production. Responsibilities include:

• Working as personal assistant to a visiting playwright and/or dramaturg during their stay in St. Louis.
• Assisting a playwright in the rehearsal and development workshops.
• Assisting the managing director in the setup and presentation of the festival. (Interns will work as a co-producers by organizing the entertainment, decorations, and other offerings to patrons.)
• Helping coordinate outings for visiting artists and HotCity staff.
• Preparing post-festival grant reports
• Interns will help coordinate social outings for visiting artists and HotCity staff.

The New Play Festival internship will total no more than 60 hours. There are three positions available.
